How to Tie Dye Your Clothes Using Acrylic Paint

Image
This trend from the 1960s has made a comeback! Tie-dying your clothes is a fun way to add colour to your wardrobe. Celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Harry Styles and Willow Smith have all been spotted rocking the tie-dye fashion trend. What you need: Acrylic paint in various colours of your choice Plastic bottles with spouts for each colour of paint (This is a good opportunity to recycle disposable water bottles or empty sauce bottles.) Warm water and cold water White t-shirt or material you want to tie-dye Rubber bands Method: Mixing the paint can get quite messy, so it is best to do it outdoors on the grass. Pour a different colour of paint into each plastic bottle. You only need to fill about one eighth of the bottle with paint.  Fill each bottle halfway, with warm water. Put the lids on tightly and shake well. This step is very important if you are using acrylic paint. If it doesn't mix properly, the paint may become dry and crust...

Don't get lost in the grand scale of things.     Start small, too big a project might uninspire you. Fun facts about Henna :  Henna (called   mehndi   in Hin...

When your teen wants out of summer camp

Image
"I don't want to go, it's just not fun anymore, I'm not a kid anymore." This statement is usually followed by a well-prepped speech on why your teen doesn't want to go camping anymore, accompanied by a list of alternative activities that can preoccupy them during the school holidays. Teenagers have different reasons for not wanting to go to camp anymore, from feeling like they have grown out of the annual excursion to wanting to invest time in things that interest them outside of camp. When teenagers grow out of their adolescence, they want to create an identity for this new stage of their life. This is when you cue in the "I don't want to go anymore" talk. In a 2014 survey done by Sarah- Jayne Blackmore, Royal Society University Research Fellow and Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience , found that teens between the ages of 14-17, were more likely to shift away from the things they loved as children. Creating new habits, hobbies and socia...

Gap Year: Benefits of working at a summer camp

Image
Making a career choice at the age of seventeen and committing to it for a lifetime is a pivotal decision that comes with a lot of pressure. However, times have evolved and we are no longer restricted to working one specific profession for the rest of our career. During a staff training meeting held at Sugar Bay Resort, young adults were given a career guiding lecture by the Director, Zoe Ellender, who said, “Unlike in the past, you no longer have to serve in one position at one company until you retire and get yourself a golden watch for your services. These days, you are allowed to change your career choice as many times as you want to. The diversity in occupation allows for a variation in skills, which plays a significant role in creating outstanding résumés.”   Her encouraging discussion with the youngsters opened their minds to realize that it really is okay to make the wrong decisions and start over, as nothing goes to waste. She also explained the importance of takin...

5 Quick camp meals to prepare at home

Image
We all love a delicious, wholesome, meal. However, with our fast-paced lifestyles, it is often difficult to decide on a good option that’s quick, delicious and easy to prepare. The types of food served at most summer camps are carefully selected and tick all the boxes when it comes to being traditional, wholesome and on-the-go.    Since campers are away from home, summer camps make every effort to ensure that their campers are comfortable and do not feel homesick. In doing so, traditional, freshly-made food is prepared three times daily. These appetizing meals give campers the special feeling of “being at home” when they’re at camp. It also eliminates the unhealthy and quick option of grabbing take out and teaches campers to appreciate good, home-cooked meals.    With summer camp offering so many activities that require physical participation, healthy wholesome meals are a necessity. The meals served at camp need to provide campers with long-lasting energ...

How to handle being a mom & businesswoman

Image
Zoe Ellender is the camp director of Sugar Bay Resort. Ellender gave up her formal career in Law and Legal Services to pursue her dream of creating a safe and fun paradise, an American-styled summer camp in South Africa, especially for children.    Sixteen years later, she smiles and delegates as the proud owner of one of the best children’s camps in South Africa and being a cordial mom of three.  Ellender shares some of the challenges of being a businesswoman and a mother and how she overcomes them: Three years since the inception of Sugar Bay, Ellender was blessed with her first child, a beautiful daughter, whom she named Tao. During this period, Ellender was still fully involved in the day-to-day running of her business and also juggling being a mother to her firstborn.    “It certainly wasn’t easy being a mother and running a business that just recently kicked-off. At this early stage of the establishment of my company, there was pressure ...

Some of the highlights of this week were the “Beach Party Night” and “A School of Fish Talent Show”. The campers also went on an exciting excursion to Ushaka Marine World, an aquarium and water park where they got to see the special “Finding Nemo/Finding Dory” tank.    Have a look at our album on Facebook featuring more pictures from Finding Dory week.    Candy Land Week: 16 – 23 December 2016   Sugar Bay got super sweet during Candy Land week and ...
