Get to Know – Paris

Image
Named after the city of love and beauty… is our lover-of-pink and pretty camp Programmer, Paris!      Paris has been at Sugar Bay for 5 years.    Yes! That's half a decade!      She started of as a counselor in August 2011, worked her way up to become the first ever Arts & Crafts Instructor and then got promoted to Camp Programmer a year later.    Paris's favourite Sugar Bay activity is sea swim. She enjoys sea swim because it doesn't require any specialized equipment. “All you need is your costume and to head down to the beach. It's so much fun splashing around in the waves!” she said.    Our “pretty in pink” programmer's favourite camp food is fish and chips.    We asked Paris “What's the one thing people don't know about you?”   She replied: “I may look like a Princess, but I love getting down and dirty playing soccer and riding...

Get to know - Fives

Image
“Hey, hey, hey, give me a high five!” Heard that line before? Then surely you must have met Fives.    Fives is Sugar Bay’s Kayaking Pro Counselor (PC). Fives has been a counselor at Sugar Bay for 8 months now. He has told us that working at Sugar Bay has been a dream as he was very inspired as a camper because it changed his life and gave him a wonderful reason to pursue a career as a camp counselor.  Fives favourite activities are kayaking and skating. When we asked him what the best part of his job is, he responded by answering: “Chilling with the kids, chilling at the beach and being crazy weird of course.” Fives says the kids love him because of his weird attitude, loud personality, and humor which he is not afraid to express. Fives favourite camp meal is actually a dessert… He admits that he is deeply in love with the Peppermint Crisp Tart. Oh dear Fives… Finally admitting his guilty pleasures. LOL! Describing himself in 3 words, his choices were “fun, crazy...

Get to know – Aurora

Image
She's Sugar Bay's Arts and Crafts PC (Pro Counselor) and, one of the most creative and gentle spirits around camp...She is Aurora!    And name well suited we must say... She's as kind, loving and caring as the Disney Princess Aurora herself. Aurora has been a counselor at Sugar Bay for only 5 months but has worked hard and earned her position as a PC.    Aurora's favourite activities are making friendship bracelets and kayaking. Aurora or “ Rori” as many call her has an obsession, she calls it “a healthy obsession with unicorns”. A unicorn-unicorn or a uni corn?    Not sure which one she was talking about. However, we have our reservations concerning how healthy this obsession is. Especially since she answered this way when we asked her this question: “If you could be any animal, what would you be?” Her reply: “I feel like you already know t...

Get to know - Pecan

Image
No, he didn’t arrive during Peanuts week, but he was named after a nut. We call him Pecan!    Pecan has been a counselor at Sugar Bay for 8 weeks now and we must add, the campers are nuts about Pecan! Pecan is our Paint ball PC (Pro Counselor) and loves paint ball to bits.    He says the best part about his job is seeing the smiles on all the kids’ faces while they’re participating in all the activities they enjoy. Pecan says what he loves most is that the kids arrive here as strangers and when they leave camp, they leave as friends.    Pecan’s favourite camp meal is fish and chips. He says, “It’s the best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten in my life!”   If he could have one super power, it would be for him to stop time, simply to savour the best moments in life.    Describing himself in three words, Pecan’s choices were “Tall, outgoing and energetic”.    If he could be an animal, he sa...

Get to know – Javelin

Image
He's the boy Avril Lavigne sings about in her smash hit Skater Boy and he is exclusive to Sugar Bay camp... His name:    Javelin is our very own skater boy who is days away from celebrating his second anniversary working here at Sugar Bay as a camp counselor. We don't mean to brag or anything, but he is no ordinary counselor... he has earned his way to become a Sugar Bay Pro Counselor (PC). Although he loves skating, Jav is also a great lover of the ocean. If he isn't skating, he would be doing sea swim. When we asked him why, he said that it's because you'll never know what's coming your way. Unpredictable much, we do however wonder how he'd react if a great white shark decided to come along and chill with him during sea swim. L OL! When we asked Jav about his role as counselor, he was quick to answer “Being a camp counselor is not just work to me, working with kids is my passion – it's a...

Camp Counselor Questions Answered

Image
Our Sugar Bay campers always head home with lots of stories to share with mum and dad. Mostly stories about the fun activities we offer, the delicious food we serve, the new friendships they have made and the crazy but cool counselors we have at camp. Quite often, parents become confused and wonder “Why is my kid speaking politics so casually?” Cool it mums and dads… This isn’t politics. This is camp jargon. For those of you who didn’t know, counselors are actually young adults who are individually chosen to care for the children at camp.  At Sugar Bay, our counselor to child ratio is 3: 1 , which is the highest in the country. Our counselors come from all around the world and most of them have actually worked in American summer camps. Our Sugar Bay Counselor’s first priority is the care, supervision and happiness of every child. Some young campers leave camp w...
