How to handle homesickness

One of the greatest issues parents are faced with these days are in fact, homesick kids. We've been having so many trust issues that most of us haven't even sent our kids away from home before the age of 12. This is becoming an issue, as the older our kids are growing only being exposed to their comfort zones, the greater their homesickness and the chances of them not being independent.

If you have decided that the time is right to send your kids away from home. Here are 5 effective strategies to help the little ones grow their wings and soar away from home.

5 Ways to deal with Homesickness:

1. Prepare your child

Preparing your children before they leave for a vacation is the first step in dealing with homesickness. It needs to be established that missing home and finding it difficult to adjust to new situations is indeed a normality. The aim of this preparation helps kids to deal with and understand their emotions. Once they understand their emotions, they will be able to deal with it.

2. Be empathic

It is essential that you allow your child to express his or her emotions, and do all that you can to reassure them about their insecurities. Your child needs to not feel like he or she has been forced to be away from home, without any consideration of their thoughts and feelings towards the matter. You should never let your child's fears of being away from home grow because of your own fears. Remember that if you are nervous about your child being away from you, elaborating on your fears will just make theirs worse.

3. Express and grow confidence

Grow your child's confidence by showing them the confidence you have as a parent in them and in the experience they will have away from home. Show them that you trust them and that you're very enthusiastic about them going away for a while. Once they see that you're excited about them being away, they will automatically be all smiles too.

4. Bolster trust

Bolstering your child's insecurities with securities are one of the best strategies to get the kids to overcome homesickness. You need to reinforce the trust that you have in the people that will be available to your child while your child is away from you. Reassure your child that there will be other people to help and guide them and that they will be safe. Once the trust is established, there will be no more fears.

5. Establish what is going to be achieved

You need to remind your children why they're going away from home and encourage them to look for all the positives in being away. Tell them about the experience they will gain and how eagerly you will await their arrival just to hear about all the new things they have experienced. This will most definitely eliminate the anxiety your child has and get them packing right away.

Here, at Sugar Bay, we deal with homesickness effectively. We take the children's minds off what they're missing at home and focus on what we have planned here at camp. We ensure that our activities get better and better with every passing day, giving the children something to look forward to. Kids are kept very busy with our interactive activities right up until bedtime. And for an extra touch of love and comfort, we ensure that our counselors make the time for a wonderful bedtime adventure story before the little ones close their eyes

If your child is one of the introverts who needs to gain some independence, you can, without doubt, send them to Sugar Bay for a first-time-away-from-home-experience that will be one of their best. We'll hold their hands and help them grow. Your kids will be strong, independent, young achievers by the time they get back to you.

Get to know – Aurora

She's Sugar Bay's Arts and Crafts PC (Pro Counselor) and, one of the most creative and gentle spirits around camp...She is Aurora!

And name well suited we must say... She's as kind, loving and caring as the Disney Princess Aurora herself. Aurora has been a counselor at Sugar Bay for only 5 months but has worked hard and earned her position as a PC.

Aurora's favourite activities are making friendship bracelets and kayaking.

Aurora or “Rori” as many call her has an obsession, she calls it “a healthy obsession with unicorns”.

A unicorn-unicorn or a uni corn?

Not sure which one she was talking about.

However, we have our reservations concerning how healthy this obsession is. Especially since she answered this way when we asked her this question:

“If you could be any animal, what would you be?”

Her reply:

“I feel like you already know the answer... A unicorn duh!”

As if that wasn't unicorn enough...

When we asked her if she had a superpower, what would it be, and why?

Her answer:

“Rainbow powers! Somewhat to a unicorn. Unicorns make people happy and I like making people happy.”

Okay Rori-corn! Okay!

Other than her “so-called healthy unicorn obsession”. Aurora described herself in 3 words as “Bubbly, motivated and dependable”.

Her most memorable camp was during Adventure Time week when she got to work side by side with her sister Alaska. Adventure Time is also Aurora's favourite TV show.

Rori concluded her conversation with us by describing her role as a counselor here at Sugar Bay. This is what our Princess Aurora had to say:

“I'm really easy to connect with. Most kids just want to have fun and have someone they can trust to talk about all the stuff going on in their life. I like to think I'm that type of person they can talk to openly. Also, I am kind of funny too.”

Here's more about our amazing Arts and Crafts PC Aurora:

That's it for this week friends. Stay tuned until next week so that you can get to know more about another one of your favourite Sugar Bay camp counselors.

Aurora and the rest of our counselors at Sugar Bay are looking forward to make new friends with all of you. We'd be delighted for you to join our team and one day become a Sugar Bay Counselor. Take a look at our Themed Holiday Camp Playlist to get a sneak peak of just how much fun our counselors and kids have together and also how our counselors view camp. Review: March/April/May Holiday Camps

March 2016:

Adventure Time Week: 20–27 March 2016

The first school holiday of 2016 commenced with an astounding Adventure Time themed holiday camp. Every day was turned into an adventure for our campers just as it were in the cartoon network series, Adventure Time, with Finn the human and Jake the dog. Our campers also went on a Beemo (the little blue gaming box) inspired excursion to the gaming arcade in the Gateway Theatre of shopping. Adventure Time week ended with a burst of colour, with a Rainicorn colour festival.

The Maze Runner Week: 27 March–3 April 2016

Before campers realized it, they were waking up in the Glade. Suddenly, all our adventurers were transformed into Maze Runners and had to escape the gruesome Grievers all week long. The experience got real when our Maze Runners were taken on a camp-out and had to survive a night in the maze. They also had an exciting excursion to the Crocodile Creek in Ballito.

April 2016:

The Peanuts Week: 10–17 April 2016

Camp was then bombarded by Red Barons and there were definitely barking dogs heard too. Snoopy and the Peanuts were in the house! Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Woodstock and the rest of the Peanuts gang made their special appearance at Sugar Bay. Campers were given the opportunity to literally “go nuts” all week long as they participated in an array of peanut associated activities. The highlight of the week was, of course, the electrifying excursion to the Barnyard Theatre, where our campers watched the thrilling stage production, “90's Mania”.

Superheroes versus Villains Week: 17-24 April 2016

War began to rage between the superheroes and villains of Marvel and DC, and this is when Sugar Bay transformed into Comic Con and it was time for Superheroes versus Villains week. From Spider-Man to the Silver Surfer, we had them all at camp ready to battle it out and determine who is the ultimate superior. We went all out and took the battle to another level as we travelled to the Galleria Ice Rink in Amanzimtoti and created our very own, “Superheroes and Villains on Ice” show.

Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Week: 24 April-1 May 2016

Something started cooking at Sugar Bay... Perhaps this is how we drove straight into Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives week. Inspired by the Food Network's popular show, hosted by the fabulous food lover, Guy Fieri, camp was turned into a food lover's paradise. Each day was themed accordingly to a different country with the idea of giving campers an experience to taste the different cuisine of the world in just one week.

May 2016:

Spin n Win Week: 1-8 May 2016

As if that wasn't enough, we decided to get crazy over here and host another authentic holiday camp altogether. This is when we introduced Spin n Win week. The aim of this camp was to feature some of the best camp themes every day, in an outrageous spin the wheel to win and determine the theme, the food, and the prize, game show concept motif. It was ludicrous! Our campers were also treated to an illustrious excursion to Ushaka Marine's Wet 'n Wild Water Park, where they had an incredible experience splashing away and having a blast

So what if our May holiday camps are over? We've got more fun holiday camps lined up just for you. Check out our Themed Holiday Camp Playlist to get an idea of exactly what we get up to. Our amazing counselors cannot wait to have you here.

5 Simple & Sweet Mother's Day Treats

Mother's day is this weekend! And with school ongoing, the hectic homework loads and all the other things we get up to in between, it could be that you forgot, or that you just didn't get enough time to get mom something special for Mother's Day yet.

Sugar Bay knows that making mom feel appreciated and loved is what Mother's Day is all about.

There's no need to go all out and get mom something expensive for it to be special. It's what you do for her that she finds special and priceless. Make mother's day memorable and show your appreciation to all your marvelous moms that keep sending you to Sugar Bay.

Here are 5 simple and sweet Mother's Day treats that you can spoil mom with this Mother's Day:

1. Pick her some fresh flowers from your garden

They don't need to be her favourite, they just need to look pretty and be picked with love. Pick mom some flowers and arrange them in a pretty bunch.

2. Make her mug feel snug

Use whiteboard markers and write her sweet notes and draw her lovely pictures on a plain porcelain white mug before filling it with a delicious, warm beverage of her choice.

3. Make her a card

Make mom a lovely card with a sweet poem in it for Mother's Day, so that she will have a memorabilia to look at and recall how wonderful her day was.

4. Breakfast in bed

An egg, a slice of toast and a cup of coffee is all you need to get her day going good. For once, it would be awesome to give mom a break and for you to do the breakfast especially for her.

5. Treat mom to a massage

Mom is always a busy body and hardly ever gets enough rest. That's why Mother's Day gives you the opportunity to pamper her a little. Get some massage oil and give mom a foot or head massage. It's a sweet way of saying “I'm sorry for making you run after me all the time and giving you headaches from all the noise I make”, (just kidding).

Make Mom feel like a Queen and wish her well from us at Sugar Bay this Mother's Day!
