  Taking a “gap year” has become a popular term among high school graduates. A “gap year” is an extended study leave before a student begins tertiary education, and is intended to give students more time to figure out what career/ degree they would like to pursue. Many school leavers have decided to work as a camp counselor at Sugar Bay during their gap year to reap the benefits that come with the job. Camp counselors have the opportunity to earn an income without sitting in an office all day. This job appeals to many young adults, because of the casual and fun working environment, as well as the travel opportunities it opens up to work at international summer camps.      Besides supervising & mentoring children, the job requires counselors to be playful, social, active and enjoy the beach & outdoors. “Hey, hey, hey, give me a high five!” Heard that line before? Then surely you must have met Fives.    Fives is Sugar Bay’s Kayaking Pro Counselor (PC). Fives has been a counselor at Sugar Bay for 8 months now. He has told us that working at Sugar Bay has been a dream as he was very inspired as a camper because it changed his life and gave him a wonderful reason to pursue a career as a camp counselor.  Fives favourite activities are kayaking and skating. When we asked him what the best part of his job is, he responded by answering: “Chilling with the kids, chilling at the beach and being crazy weird of course.” Fives says the kids love him because of his weird attitude, loud personality, and humor which he is not afraid to express. Moscow week, Cake Boss vs. Ice Cream Week, Australia Week and many more... All these camps, and especially Sugar Bay itself, are always in my heart. But it had to start somewhere... My first camp was when I came with my school on a tour - after which I was hooked! But the real fun started with American States week, my first holiday camp. I remember arriving as shy and quiet as ever. I was taken aback by all the activity and joy around me, because up until that point I had never been to a camp worth writing about. I also loved hearing the counselors’ funky names! The activities blew my mind and I couldn’t wait to do them all. The week was filled with fun, laughter, friendships and a new family. A year later I was back, seeing some old and new faces of both campers and counselors alike.
