Review: April 2017 Holiday Camps

Image
Our April holiday camps were A-mazing! It’s no April Fool’s joke, this we reassure you. We had an all-star line up with themes fresh out the box office for each of our three-holiday camps.    Hipster Week: 9-16 April 2017 We got our groove on and stepped into the sixties for Hipster week. This camp accommodated 94 campers and was our opening holiday camp for the first school break of 2017. The kids enjoyed many fun activities integrated around the theme such as; Hipster Hunts, Hipster Bonfires, Trashion Shows, Mainstream Markets and the Trendiest Party in Town. They also went on a “Hippie” excursion to the popular tourist attraction, the Durban beachfront, where they went kayaking, bodyboarding, built sand castles and had a “Wanderlust” class along the beach. Browse through our Facebook Album to see more pictures from the Hipster week themed holiday camp.    Hogwarts Week: 16-23 April 2017 There were many magical events and mysteri...

Review: March/April/May Holiday Camps

Image
March 2016: Adventure Time Week: 20–27 March 2016   The first school holiday of 2016 commenced with an astounding Adventure Time themed holiday camp. Every day was turned into an adventure for our campers just as it were in the cartoon network series, Adventure Time, with Finn the human and Jake the dog. Our campers also went on a Beemo (the little blue gaming box) inspired excursion to the gaming arcade in the Gateway Theatre of shopping. Adventure Time week ended with a burst of colour, with a Rainicorn colour festival. The Maze Runner Week: 27 March–3 April 2016   Before campers realized it, they were waking up in the Glade. Suddenly, all our adventurers were transformed into Maze Runners and had to escape the gruesome Grievers all week long. The experience got real when our Maze Runners were taken on a camp-out and had to survive a night in the maze. They also had an exciting excursion to the Crocodile Creek in Balli...

The Maze Runner - Get the Look

Image
So, this Sunday Sugar Bay will be transforming into the glade and will be the host to many Maze Runners. We are super excited! So much so, that we have decided to help you Get-the-“Maze Runner”-Look before you get to the glade. Get your suitcases out and let’s pack to become Maze Runners!  Girls: Army colours and shades of grey is the palette we are looking at. A worn out and rugged look is what we’re aiming for.  We can still be fashionable when dressing up to be a Maze Runner. Let’s start with flat, rubber soled boots, hop into grey stained denim shorts and a thin sleeveless cotton vest. And there you have it! Any look to this effect would do you justice as a specialized Maze Runner or should we say Runner-ess?  Guys: Shades of neutral browns and greys are where we’re headed. We want to maintain a camouflaged look but still keep it classy.  Ankle high leather boots with ...

5 Fun autumn outdoor activities

Image
The beginning of March is scientifically said to be the beginning of autumn in the southern hemisphere.  However, having just welcomed March in South Africa, it still feels like the middle of a scorching summer.  Nevertheless, the temperatures will be cooling down a little soon, and that could mean less trips to the sea, however, being the outdoor-loving holiday camp that we are, Sugar Bay refuses to let the cooler weather stop us from having fabulous outdoor fun.  5 Fun autumn outdoor activities:  1. Go for walks.  Go for walks, but always find something fun to do while walking. For example, turn the walk into a hunt for pretty leaves and unusually shaped stones which you can encourage your kids to use in a scrap book.      2. Build stuff with nature.  Creating little tents or dens with sticks and fallen leaves is a fun activity that allows kids to express their creativity. Try buildi...

5 Tips to manage hectic homework loads

Image
So we're less than a month away from our exciting themed holiday camps at Sugar Bay and that's a great thing! Except, we can't prepare kids for fun, unless they've worked hard enough to pick up their grades. There is also one other thing that is starting to pick up right now and that is our kids' homework loads.    They're writing reports on a daily basis, they're building projects on a weekly basis, and they’re reviewing books during their weekends and so much more! It's okay if your child is struggling to balance a hectic daily routine and at the same time accomplish workloads of homework, because we at Sugar Bay have done our homework and are proud to say… We've got your back!  5 Tips to manage hectic homework loads:       1. Find a quiet place to work and study   A quiet room free of any modern day distractions like the television would be a great start to ensure that the kiddies are focused and actually ge...
