It's been another wonderful year at Sugar Bay! So much sunshine, so much sea, so much sand and so much Sweet Summer! We can proudly say that we've had more enthusiastic campers, more dedicated counselors, more adventurous schools, more exciting themed camps... but most importantly, more unforgettable memories with all of you amazing people this year!

With the new year arriving sooner than the break of dawn... We've decided to recap some of our unforgettable memories we've shared with all our campers and schools during 2015.

How to create a Sparkling Snowman Globe

So it's almost Christmas! But we know almost isn't good enough. The wait builds up so much anticipation, especially on Christmas Eve!

Here at Sugar Bay we are big on the festive season and we are well aware of how painful the wait to unwrap your gift can be. That's why we've hooked you up with a great solution – a D.I.Y Sparkling Snowman Bulb which you can keep yourself busy with on Christmas eve and add an extra sparkle to your tree!

We promise, after you see your D.I.Y Sparkling Snowman Bulb on the tree....

Christmas will be worth the wait!

Let's start sparkling:

You will need:

  • Used Glass Globes
  • Black and Orange Paint
  • Twigs from Tree Branches
  • Transparent Wood Glue
  • White and Silver Glitter
  • Paint Brush
  • String

Method:

1. Cover the used glass bulb with transparent wood glue.

2. Dust the white and silver glitter over the glued light bulb and leave to dry for 20 minutes.

3. Using the transparent wood glue, glue the twig arms on either side of the light bulb.

4. With a fine tip paintbrush, paint eyes, a mouth and buttons in black and a carrot nose in orange paint to make the bulb look like a snowman and leave to dry for 30 minutes.

5. Tie a piece of string around the pin of the light bulb to secure it from falling and then make a larger loop knot.

And there you have it...A Sparkling Snowman to Shine on your Christmas Tree!

Splendid Sparkly Ideas:

  • Add a pretty piece of chiffon ribbon on your snowman as a scarf!
  • Decorate the metal piece of the bulb with silver sequins for an added sparkle and make your snowman bulb outstanding!

Time for Thai and Ridiculousness at Sugar Bay!

School may be around the corner, but we aren't ready to give up our holiday spirit quite just yet! We have two awesome and fun-filled holiday camps planned for the month of January, and we're really excited about welcoming in another year with another group of enthusiastic campers and another exciting camp theme!

Thailand Week:

27 December – 3 January

We hope everybody is ready to jump right out of their comfort zones as we change countries for a week and turn Sugar Bay into Thailand! We can't wait to take the campers on an adventure into exotic territory and explore an entirely new culture with a range of exciting activities aimed at broadening our horizons!

Highlights:

  • Durban Harbour Boat Cruise Excursion:
Thailand is big on beautiful scenery especially where the ocean is concerned, and so are we here in Durban! This excursion will allow our campers to experience the ocean breeze in their hair as they ride on a cruise boat and take in the marvelous and scenic Durban Harbour.

  • Fool Moon Party:
The Full Moon Party is an all-night beach fire party in Thailand which is held on the night of, before or after every full moon. However, since there is no full moon and it will be New Year's Eve, we have decided to host a Fool Moon Fire Party which our campers will enjoy all through the night and welcome the new year with a striking firework display!

  • Songkran Water Festival:
On New Years day in Thailand, it is tradition to celebrate by hosting a “Songkran” Festival. And here at Sugar Bay, we are experts at wet and wild water festivals the right way! The name of the festival was derived from the definition of the word itself which means transformation or change, which is super relevant since we are transforming into a new year!

Who's ready to travel to Thailand? Head over to our website and book online to secure your place for another camp this summer. To view the finer details for each of our themed holiday camps and prices, check out our rates and dates.

Ridiculousness Week:

3 January – 10 January

This is going to be one ridiculous week, because we've decided to get even CRAZIER than usual! Just like the T.V show we all know and love, we're looking for the most outrageous and daring campers to take a stand and show us just how ridiculous they can be! From the weird to the wonderful to the downright exceptional! We're looking for a gang of quirky campers to come and be ridiculous with us at Sugar Bay for a whole Ridiculousness Week!

Highlights:

  • The Ridiculous Show:
Just like the Ridiculousness series has a laugh with their audience about various viral videos from the Internet, usually involving failed do-it-yourself attempts at stunts, Sugar Bay will be doing just the same and the panelists (our campers) will be given a chance to add mock commentary. It's going to be ridiculous!
  • Ushaka Marine World Excursion:
We're taking Ridiculousness to a whole other level when we take our campers out on an exciting excursion to Ushaka Marine World where they can get ridiculous riding the water slides in the Wet 'n Wild Water theme park.

  • Ridiculous Quiz:
Our campers will be put to the test of how “big” of a ridiculousness fan they are when they are quizzed about all things ridiculous. This will give our campers a chance to interact and show off their knowledge and ultimately win the title of the most ridiculous camper at Sugar Bay.

Come get ridiculous with us! Head over to our website and book online to secure your place for another camp this summer. To view the finer details for each of our themed holiday camps and prices, check out our rates and dates.

D.I.Y Dreamy Donut Pillows

Here at Sugar Bay we love delicious donuts and everything to do with dunking and devouring them! In fact, we are so delirious about donuts that we took our donut addiction to the next level by showing you how to make your very own D.I.Y Dreamy Donut Pillows! Without the issue of sewing them together!

Let's do donuts!

Materials Needed:

  • Metallic Satin Apparel Fabric (In the colour of your favourite donut flavour)
  • White/Brown/Any Pastel Coloured Fabric (For your frosting)
  • Scraps of Fabric in various colours (For the sprinkles)
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue & Glue Gun
  • Pillow Stuffing (Foam)

Step 1

Using a pencil, hand draw two large circles on the satin fabric. You can use a large bowl and a smaller one for the centre to trace out the shape. Cut them out carefully.

Step 2:

Place the fabric for the frosting on the traced donut fabric and cut into a shape you desire or into a smaller circle that fits the donut.

Step 3:

Stick together the two circles along the outer edges on the reverse side using the hot glue from the glue gun. Flip inside out and hot glue the frosting circle onto the donut.

Step 4:

Stick together the inner circle leaving a small opening to stuff the pillow. Using Satin Fabric allows you to slightly burn the edges with a lighter to prevent fraying of the fabric.

Step 5:

Stuff the pillow with foam!

Step 6:

Cut out thin strips from the scrap fabric to make the sprinkles and glue onto the finished frosted donut.

Here's a Decorative Donut Design Idea:

To give your donut an added distinctiveness, bedazzle the sprinkles with some stick on diamant├ęs!

And there you have it! A divine donut pillow for sweet donut dreams!

What Does Your Favourite Donut Say About You?

Doughnut Week at Sugar Bay has begun and it is absolutely divine!

We caught up with all our campers creating delicious donuts and we wondered...

What's behind all the decorative designs and different donuts?

What does your favourite donut say about you?

Donuts with lots of Sprinkles:

Your desire to have donuts with sprinkles makes you a go-getter! You’re always on the move, whether it be with work, school, or family events. You’re always the life of the party, especially if you bring sprinkled donuts to it!

Chocolate Glazed Donuts:

You love taking that plain donut and sprucing it up! You walk with a little pep in your step, and your upbeat attitude is admired by all! You can always make others smile! Keep on keeping on!

Plain Glazed Donuts:

You don’t need all that fancy stuff in life to make you happy. Honestly, you just like what you like, and if it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, then so be it!

Donuts with Fun Designs:

You know that donuts have lots of sugar in them, but you don’t care. Cavities? Pshhht...You got this! Nothing scares you! You’re always the first to ride the new roller coaster or try the strange item on the menu!

Icing Sugar Powdered Donuts:

You enjoy the fun things in life, and will never stop walking to the beat of your own special drum! Other people can be grouchy and choose not to smile at silly things, but you sure can! You’re one in a million!

Cinammon & Sugar Donuts:

You take your time and enjoy thinking stuff through thoroughly! No decision you’ve made hasn’t been carefully considered, weighing all the pros and cons of the matter. Luckily for you, doughnuts only have pros!

Let the Minion Madness Begin!

It's Minions Week at Sugar Bay Holiday Camp so it's time to get your “Gru” on! And we're getting our “Gru” on by showing you how to create these adorable and delicious Despicable Me Minion Mallows!

You will need:

  • 12 large marshmallows
  • 1 slab of white chocolate melted
  • 2 teaspoons of yellow food colouring
  • 1 cup of icing sugar
  • 3 blue fruit-roll-ups
  • 5 teaspoons black food colouring
  • Icing gun/piping bag
  • 24 white Mentos sweets
  • 12 sosatie sticks
Directions:

1. Melt white chocolate in a bowl over boiling water.
2. Add yellow food colouring to white chocolate and mix well.
3. Stick Marshmallow into pointed side of sosatie stick.
4. Dip the Marsh mallow into the yellow melted chocolate and allow to cool in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
5. Slice blue fruit roll-ups into 2 centimeter strips. Press strip around the bottom portion of the marshmallow to create blue overalls for your minions.
6. In another bowl, prepare the icing sugar and colour it until it turns completely black.
7. With an icing gun or icing piping bag, draw a big, black circle (or two smaller black circles) onto each marshmallow. Press the white Mentos candies (or two candies) into the icing.
8. Pipe a thin, black line from one side of the eyeball, around the back of the marshmallow, until it touches the other side of the eyeballs to create goggle lines.
9. Pipe black pupils onto your Mentos eyeballs.
10. Refrigerate and allow icing to harden completely for 20 minutes

Here's a Marvelous Minion Idea:

Pop your Minion Mallows over chocolate brownies or cupcakes and make them Marvelous Minion Mallows!

Then go bananas while eating your minion mallows!
