Review: August/September 2017 Holiday Camps

Image
We bid farewell to winter and promised that our August holiday camps were going to be amazing, and we delivered. We hosted four holiday camps which hosted a total of 351 campers. We stepped into spring in style as we always do, however, this year, by celebrating our super, sweet sixteenth at Sugar Bay!    X-Factor week : 6-13 August We rolled out the red carpet and gave all our 77 talented campers a platform to showcase their talents this week at camp. We hosted our very own version of the X-Factor, called the S-Factor at Sugar Bay, where campers competed for the ultimate prize of a free holiday camp to Sugar Bay. Our Sugar Bay Superstar was Shawn Li, who won the judges over with his spectacular break dancing. The campers participated in many fun activities integrated around the theme such as; Capturing the X-Factor, Lip Sync Battles, Carnival night, Karaoke, The S-Factor Show and a Red Carpet Party night and Awards evening. They also went on an exciting excursion to...

Why kids prefer camp over school?

Image
Camp and school are very similar in that both are learning environments for children. However, the differences between the academic and experiential learning context explains why many children not only prefer camp, but also why they gain more personal growth in the camp environment. Here are 8 differences between camp & school: 1. Experiential learning method Learning is practiced on a daily basis at both camp and school. While school is more about textbook learning and studying for exams, camp promotes learning via experiential education. At camp, children get to physically participate in an activity and attain a skill from it. This method of learning seems to be what many children prefer. 2. Informal atmosphere School provides a formal environment, which children may find intimidating and conformist. Camp, on the other hand, is a very casual environment which allows kids to learn while still having fun and without too much restriction. The quote, “What we...

From Drab to Fab

Image
A lot of people associate summer with fitness, but finding workout clothes you like can prove to be a mission. So why not create your own workout shirt with these 7 easy steps. What you will need: An old t-shirt scissors     1. First you'll need an old t-shirt, preferably a bigger size and some scissors. 2. Cut off the neckline, the bottom hem, and the sleeves. When you’re cutting the sleeves, cut down from the shoulder and curve below the armpit seam.  3. Determine how low you want the  neckline to be, and cut off the extra. 4. Now flip the shirt over and cut out the back to make the narrow racer back, curving in from the armpits. Then cut a deep V from the back neckline. 5. Using the excess from when you cut off the bottom hem, stretch it until it is a long piece of fabric, and knot it at the top of the racer back, a little above the bottom of the V. 6. Wrap the string ...

Mysteries of missing materials at Sugar Bay

Image
After a week of constant fun and laughter; missing items are probably the only (but major) “anti-climax” of camp. While campers return with a lot of exciting stories to share about their experience at camp, very few of these stories ever tell the tale of how that pair of jeans or takkies went missing. The loss of any item may be quite frustrating for any parent, especially if the lost property guidelines are not clear. Below are our guidelines detailing how we take care of lost property at camp: “ Counselors do not care about my missing items” Counselors take the utmost care to prevent items from going missing. On the arrival day we point out the Lost Property section and explain the lost property procedures. We also display lost property everyday after lunch before campers go up for siesta. At the end of everyday, counselors go around camp to round up any items that have been left out, and place them in the Lost Property section. “ Nobody helped me to find my it...

Musical Memories make Magical Moments

Image
Whew! Time really does fly when you're having a blast. We are already 5 days into camp, and with 2 more days remaining, we had to share the life changing fun that's been happening on our shores these past few days. Monday Campers kicked off the Monday blues with a trip to the beach where they spent the day making memories under the warm sun on the Zinkwazi shores. This pleasant day was rounded off by a perfect beach picnic with our awesome counselors. Later that evening, the juniors had a lot of slimy fun at their quiz night. Each group was asked a set of questions and the group that answered the most questions incorrectly had their counselor dunked in slime. The seniors had a musical evening as they headed down to the new sports hall for their "Riff Off" where they were split in groups of four and had the chance to share their favorite block busting musical tracks with other groups. This was indeed the best part of the night as we watched so many shy kids step ou...

Camp drops a Pitch Perfect beat

Image
"Without music, life would be an error"  - Friedrich Nietzsche                                           Holiday Camp is finally here! This season kicked off on a high note as we welcomed our campers from all over the country on Sunday. After weeks of excitement and preparation, the counselors were anxious to make sure that they provided our camp buddies with the best welcome to Barden University (the sunny skies and pleasantly warm weather made this a lot easier!). Inspired by the popular movie Pitch Perfect; the best words to describe our theme this week are absolute aca-awesome musical madness. In this movie,  college life is made up of nothing less than acapella and total musical fun! The atmosphere was immediately filled with voices of exciteme...
