Experiential Education – Education via Experience

Image
Simple, yet essential life skills like appreciation, courage, trust, etcetera, cannot be studied out the pages of a book. These lessons require direct participation and are best learned from purposeful reflection.    A holiday camp which encourages spontaneous opportunities for learning seemed to be a great start for laying the foundation for experiential education. Experiential Education is a process through which a learner constructs knowledge, skill, and value from direct experience.    At Sugar Bay holiday camp, four metres elevated from the ground, was not only where a new crate building record was achieved, but also courage. Motivated by a bunch of campers, a little boy conquered his fear of heights. This was where he discovered that he was indeed a courageous young man.   A few metres away, a group of girls were sitting under a tree, braiding friendship bracelets. After the class, they exchanged bracelets with a str...

Busting Myths (and Making Parents Happy)

Image
We're getting ready to host a Myth Busters Week here at Sugar Bay, where campers from all over the country will get together to bust some of the long-running myths and mysteries about their favourite place on the North Coast, Sugar Bay Holiday Camp. While planning which magical myths we'd take on in the name of science, we came across some widely-spread myths about summer camps and thought "Hey! Ain't nobody got time for that! Parents need to know the truth!" Which is why we're here to bust 4 of the many myths about summer camps. Sure we may not be well-moustached and wear lab coats like our geeky Mythbusting friends on the Discovery Channel, but we do have scientific studies to back us, years of experience and photographic evidence to boot. We'd like to show you the value of summer camp and why you should let us explode your camper's mind (with fun!) Myth #1: My Child Won't Be Safe If I'm Not There Thousands of children pass throug...

6 Things you didn't know about Tick Tack (and Tic Tacs)

Image
The Huffington Post recently did an article on Things You Didn't Know About Tic Tacs and, while that's all very interesting, we know that we've got an even more interesting Tick Tack right here at Sugar Bay. So we created a quick summary to share this Tick's terrific tale of visits to faraway lands, tan lines and more. Read on to learn more about your favourite Ropes Pro-Counselor: Did you know? 1. Tic Tacs are produced by Ferrero, the same company that makes Nutella, Kinder Chocolate, and Rocher chocolates, those nutty little balls of heaven which just so happen to be our Tick's favourite chocolate. Ferrero is an Italian company and mamma mia what do you know, Italy is on Tick's bucket list of places to visit.  2. Tic Tacs were originally (and oh so creatively) called"Refreshing Mints". As you may have guessed, there's a story behind Tick's name and it too has changed somewhat over the years. Starting out his first week during ...

Sunny and Funny - A Poem

Image
You’ll never guess what happened, This week at Sugar Bay! A photo shoot with tree frogs, And 3 pigs who lost their way.  Let’s start with the 3 little pigs; Snap, Crackle and Pop are their names. They decided over the weekend, They wanted to play some games. They started with Stuck in the Mud, But for some reason it just didn’t stick. And soon the babies were bored, And needed a new game quick. Ah, they thought, let’s play hide and seek! But our home has nowhere to hide. Let us break out, and run about, “Yes! Let’s do it!” they cried. Out they ran, up and down, With counselors chasing after. I’m sure that if we listened now, We’d still hear their laughter. Let’s not forget our 2 tree friends, That decided to strut their stuff. We called down our photographer, Whom we thought was tough. “Oh, no!” she screamed, “Please take them away! What if they jump on me?” Just point the lens and take the shot, And then feel free to...

Surf, dance & play soccer like a pro these June/ July holidays

Image
For the campers joining us for the June/July holidays they are in for a real treat! We have some fun, awesome and exciting themes planned during this time. Mr Price Pro (29 June – 6 July) This camp is going to be all about the Mr Price Pro taking place in Ballito that week, in which some of the most famous surfers, both local and international, will be competing for the title of the top surfer. During this week at camp, it will all be about surfing and being at the beach. What this theme will add to camp Campers will be able to go for early morning dawnies, which is just the best time to catch a wave. We will also be teaching campers all the surfing lingo they need to know throughout the week, and for those not to confident in the sea they can try out our mechanical surfboard before hitting the real waves. Evening activites & excursions We have cool surfing evening activities to look forward to. Campers will enjoy a Beach Camp Out,...

April holidays hit us with a firey bang!

Image
Hello there everybody! Sorry I have been quiet for a while, but it's been crazy here at Sugar Bay. The last two weeks have been truly awesome, and legends have been created here at the Bay. I don't even know where to start? Australian week started with crocodile Dundee welcoming everyone to camp! The week was filled with plenty of Auzzie moments, including camp-out which was a huge hit this week. We had all our Australian campers head to Camp Out in our very own Sugar Outback. Once there, they were met by Crocodile Dundee, and they enjoyed a delicious braai potjie, and made smores! They then sang songs and told stories around the camp fire and under the stars! We even celebrated Anzac day! This is a national day of remembrance in Australia that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars. This night we had an old school party night which was navy themed. We started with all the boys and girls on either side ...

Fire & Ice week: hot days & the coolest kids

Image
Happy hello to all ! I hope the week has brought you all sorts of happiness and smiles! So last week the campers went all Australian on me, which was pretty epic since I love Australia and their accents! Being the camera lady is so entertaining sometimes.. I get to see the funniest things! So as you have probably already seen on our media pages, this week's theme is “Fire & Ice”, which is crazy wicked! I'm loving it! From songs and dance, to team challenges, to ice experiments, it's just been non-stop craziness! As always, the kids are just super stoked to being running around in the sunny sunshine on the beach, who could blame them? Guess how many campers we have?.... Approximately 180 ! So myself and my side-kick, Doodle, are running up, down, left, right, and even flying, to get some awesome action shots of all your beautiful children! Yes... We can do this! Here are some pictures to keep you in the lo...

Australian accents & Scavenger Hunts

Image
From sunshine to rain, we have loved everyday! The kids at Sugar Bay have joined us for our Australian Week theme, where we have been putting on the most shameful Australian accents, but hey.... At least we're trying! My favourite word to say with an accent is “kangaroo”, you should try it!   We recently went on our camp out excursion, what a blast! The kids walked to our camp out spot, where we played stalk the lantern, sang camp songs around the fire, and roasted incredible marshmellows! Not only are we having epic evening activities, I've seen some kids in the ocean doing what they thought they could never do - stand on the surf board! With the help of their supporting counsellors, I've seen so many kids here this week achieve greatness in all aspects. Big ups to all of you :) Have a wonderful week ahead! Spread the love and light wherever you go.
