Get to know – Javelin

He's the boy Avril Lavigne sings about in her smash hit Skater Boy and he is exclusive to Sugar Bay camp...

His name:

Javelin is our very own skater boy who is days away from celebrating his second anniversary working here at Sugar Bay as a camp counselor.

We don't mean to brag or anything, but he is no ordinary counselor... he has earned his way to become a Sugar Bay Pro Counselor (PC).

Although he loves skating, Jav is also a great lover of the ocean. If he isn't skating, he would be doing sea swim. When we asked him why, he said that it's because you'll never know what's coming your way. Unpredictable much, we do however wonder how he'd react if a great white shark decided to come along and chill with him during sea swim. LOL!

When we asked Jav about his role as counselor, he was quick to answer “Being a camp counselor is not just work to me, working with kids is my passion – it's an opportunity to change someone's life.”

Javelin loves Sugar Bay and says that the best part of his job is meeting someone for the first time when camp begins, and ending camp knowing that he has made a new friend.

We also asked Mister Jav how he would describe himself using 3 words and “Humble, Selfless and Comical” is what slipped off his tongue.

We wrapped up our chat with Jav by asking him:

If you weren't answering these questions right here, right now, where and what would you be doing?”

His response:

I would be in the cabin, with the kids, entertaining the kids who aren't sleeping. I'm very entertaining!”

And he wasn't joking when he said he's very entertaining, as even the monkeys joined in and were very amused by our conversation with the Skater Boy.

Here's more about the Skater Boy who is unpredictable and loves to entertain (especially monkeys):

That's it for this week friends. Stay tuned until next week so that you can get to know more about another one of your favourite Sugar Bay camp counselors.

Javelin and the rest of our counselors at Sugar Bay are waiting to meet all of you this  April/May Holiday Camps. We'd be delighted for you to join our team and one day become a Sugar Bay Counselor. A-Maze-ing Maze Runner Pizza

“Beds were assigned, clothes and bathroom things were passed out, dinner was served. Pizza. Real, bona fide, greasy-fingers pizza.”

Even we licked our lips when we read these sentences in James Dashner’s The Maze Runner Novel.

Inspired by the delicious delicacy of the Maze Runner movie… Let’s make our very own A-maze-ing Maze Runner Pizza.

A-Maze-ing Maze Runner Pizza:

Base Ingredients:

·        250 ml cold milk
·        15 ml baking powder
·        2 cups flour
·        60 ml olive oil
·        5 ml salt

Method:

1.      Mix flour, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl
2.      Stir in milk and olive oil until a soft dough forms
3.      Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead 10 times.
4.      Shape dough into a ball.
5.      Cover dough with an inverted bowl and let sit for 10 minutes.
6.      Roll dough into a large circle on a baking sheet.

Topping Ingredients:

·        1 packet sun-dried tomato pesto
·        250 ml grated mozzarella cheese
·        250 ml halved cherry
·        Tomatoes seasoned with green onion seasoning
·        A handful of fresh basil leaves, torn
·        Olive oil for drizzling

Method:

1.      Spread pesto over the bases to the edges and bake for about 7 minutes in a pre-heated oven at 180 degrees Celsius until puffed and just beginning to colour at the edges.
2.      Remove from the oven. Sprinkle the cheese over the bases and dot with the seasoned tomato halves. Add some torn basil leaves before baking.
3.      Drizzle with olive oil and bake each pizza for a further 10 minutes until the bases are nicely browned and crisp.
4.      Garnish with the remaining basil.

And now, we are ready to relish an A-Maze-ing Pizza inspired by the Maze Runner books and movies!

The Maze Runner - Get the Look

So, this Sunday Sugar Bay will be transforming into the glade and will be the host to many Maze Runners. We are super excited! So much so, that we have decided to help you Get-the-“Maze Runner”-Look before you get to the glade.

Get your suitcases out and let’s pack to become Maze Runners!

Girls:

Army colours and shades of grey is the palette we are looking at. A worn out and rugged look is what we’re aiming for.

We can still be fashionable when dressing up to be a Maze Runner.

Let’s start with flat, rubber soled boots, hop into grey stained denim shorts and a thin sleeveless cotton vest. And there you have it! Any look to this effect would do you justice as a specialized Maze Runner or should we say Runner-ess?

Guys:

Shades of neutral browns and greys are where we’re headed. We want to maintain a camouflaged look but still keep it classy.

Ankle high leather boots with rubber soles, brown or grey stained denim three quarter pants and a long sleeved pull over would be perfect. You can chop and change anywhere and even add a cool accessory like a matching brown belt.

It doesn’t matter how you do it, we just want to see our Maze Runners running the glade in style. No leather boots? It’s cool, real Maze Runners run the maze barefoot. No brown clothing? Even better. Take an old white vest and stain it with tea and coffee.

Get creative Maze Runners, let’s make the glade our very own fashion parade!

Prepare yourself to run the Maze with us and survive the grievers during The Maze Runner week at Sugar Bay. Take a look at our Themed Holiday Camp Playlist to get a sneak peak of just how much fun we have. Head over to our website and book online to secure your place for another fun themed camp this April. 5 Fun Facts about the Maze Runner

Inspired by the Maze Runner movie, Sugar Bay has decided to turn into the glade next week as we host the Maze Runner week as one of our themed holiday camps.
And, because we’re cool, and oh-so-a-maze-ing, we’ve decided to share some cool facts about the Maze Runner with you.

Want to know what goes on behind-the-scenes of “The Maze Runner”? Let’s unlock the secrets behind the mysterious maze:

1. Dylan O’Brien almost didn’t get the role as Thomas

In the book, Thomas is described to be a 16-year-old boy, 5’9″ feet tall, and has brown hair. Did you know that Dylan O’Brien almost didn’t get the role of Thomas for the film as director Wes Ball thought his hairstyle was too “MTV”. Fortunately, the director changed his mind after seeing a photo of O’Brien with his hair gelled.

2. Ben is not a runner in the book

Chris Sheffield’s character, Ben, is a builder in the book but he has been changed to become a veteran runner in the movie.

3. Blake Cooper auditioned via Twitter

Blake Cooper, who appears in the film as Chuck, gained his role through an impromptu audition on Twitter. Cooper sent a series of tweets to the director after learning that the novel will be turned into a film. As seen in his tweets, Cooper is a huge fan of the novel and stated that he wants to be Chuck in the film.

4. “WICKED” to “WICKD”

In the book, the original term, “WICKED”, is an abbreviation for World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department. The organization is indeed “wicked” in the film as their organisation is responsible for the population wipe out. However, the film decided to change the term to “WICKD”.

5. The cast really had a camp out night in the Glade

As the filming location for “The Glade” scene was set in Louisiana, the entire cast of the film spent their night camping out in the Glade. Thomas Brodie-Sangste, who played Newt in the film, revealed in an interview that they “wanted to bond together” and “completely immersed in the surroundings” when trying to develop a character.
