Top 5 water activities at camp

Sugar Bay Resort, a holiday camp for kids and teens on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal is popular for all their water activities offered at camp.

Situated on the coastal village of Zinkwazi Beach, warm climate and warm sea temperatures occur throughout the year, making water sport possible throughout every season. The summer camp also has private access to the Zinkwazi lagoon and beach, which is an added benefit.

Here are 5 of the most popular water activities offered at Sugar Bay:

1. Surfing

A number of campers have learned how to surf at Sugar Bay. The camp has trained instructors in every water sport, who are passionate about the ocean and the sport they teach. Often, kids come to camp terrified of water and leave camp qualified as a level 1 surfer. Surfing is taught at different levels in the lagoon, and campers receive certificates for completing each level of training successfully before they get to surf in the ocean. There is no greater pleasure than standing up on the surfboard for the first time.

2. Stand-Up-Paddle-Boarding (SUP)
Stand-up-paddle-boarding is the second-most-popular water sport at Sugar Bay and often practiced in the Zinkwazi lagoon. Again, our campers are taught this water sport in levels; from safety, to balance and eventually paddling solo. Whether you’re just balancing on your board, or paddling, this sport is a great low impact exercise that is a combination of balance, strength, and endurance. It is also a very relaxing sport that our campers really enjoy.

3. Body-Boarding
This sport, known as the art of riding waves in a prone position and the easier way to get into the waves, also referred to as boogie-boarding, is the third-most-popular water sport at Sugar Bay. Body-boarding is great for improving the muscular strength of your arms and developing leg muscles. This sport is also taught in stages, with beginners learning the basics in the lagoon until they are able to body-board in the ocean.

4. Kayaking
Kayaking is a sport which requires a paddler to be seated upright in a kayak and paddle in order to move across the water. At Sugar Bay, paddlers kayak in the lagoon, as well as the ocean. The sport is great for cardiovascular fitness and helps increase muscle strength in the back, arms, shoulders, and chest from moving the paddles. Campers, however, enjoy the activity because of its mental benefits. They find the activity to be stress relieving.

5. Sea Swim/Pool Swim

If there is one water sports activity at Sugar Bay that requires no equipment in order for it to be performed and offers unlimited fun, its sea swim, and pool swim. All campers need is for their sunscreen to be thoroughly applied and their bathing costumes. Sugar Bay Resort offers pool to swim on the camp premises, in the twenty-five by twenty-five-meter pool, and sea swims in a designated area at the beach. Both activities aren’t restricted by rules. There are only safety precautions to abide by. There’s nothing more exciting than jumping over waves in the ocean and diving into the deep-end of the swimming pool after coming down the water slides. This water sport is an all-time favourite at camp and one that is certainly most exciting.

These are only a few water sport activities offered at Sugar Bay Resort. The camp offers over one-hundred free choice of activities, both on land and in water.
