Camp Counselor Questions Answered

Our Sugar Bay campers always head home with lots of stories to share with mum and dad. Mostly stories about the fun activities we offer, the delicious food we serve, the new friendships they have made and the crazy but cool counselors we have at camp.

Quite often, parents become confused and wonder “Why is my kid speaking politics so casually?”

Cool it mums and dads…

This isn’t politics. This is camp jargon.

For those of you who didn’t know, counselors are actually young adults who are individually chosen to care for the children at camp.

At Sugar Bay, our counselor to child ratio is 3:1, which is the highest in the country.

Our counselors come from all around the world and most of them have actually worked in American summer camps.

Our Sugar Bay Counselor’s first priority is the care, supervision and happiness of every child.

Some young campers leave camp with only one goal in mind, and that is to be a Sugar Bay Counselor.

For inspired kids like these, here are some answers to many of their Counselor questions:

What is the role of a camp counselor?

As a Camp Counselor you are a role model, friend, instructor and hero to campers aged 7-17 years. Your responsibilities include overall supervision of your campers and ensuring their well being and safety whilst they are enjoying the fun and rewarding experience that Sugar Bay Holiday Camp has to offer.

What are the responsibilities of a camp counselor?

The Camp Counselor is responsible for planning, leading, and implementing core and non-core programs and experiences for children in a small group setting, at Sugar Bay we do this per cabin. They will also be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in his/her group or cabin.

Does a camp counselor receive remuneration?

A camp counselor definitely receives remuneration as they will be offering a service to the camp and campers after all. At Sugar Bay we pay our camp counselors the going rate and also reward them for their hard work and good performance in many ways, some of which include promoting them to a higher level.

At what age can a person become a camp counselor?

Sugar Bay’s camp counselors are usually students who are over the age of 17. Then only may they apply to enroll for our certified Counselor in Training (CIT) Course.

How can I become a camp counselor?

In order to become a camp counselor at Sugar Bay, you will need to enroll for a CIT (Counselor in Training) Course. This training includes child and staff psychology, First Aid and CPR, teaching practicals, physiology and safety protocols. After passing these examinations, there is still a mandatory apprenticeship before qualification.

When are the CIT courses held?

In 2016 we have three CIT Training weeks planned:

  • 3-17 July
  • 7-21 August
  • 27 December – 8 January

These CIT courses are 2 weeks long.
