10 Things you didn't know about the Peanuts

Peanuts week at Sugar Bay has finally arrived! Our campers are having so much fun with Snoopy and Good old Charlie Brown. Did you know that the Peanuts comic strip, although only recently turned into a movie, was in existence since 1950?
There are so many things about the Peanuts you didn't know.

Inspired by the Peanuts week at Sugar Bay...

Here are 10 Fun Facts about The Peanuts:

1. CHARLIE BROWN WAS MODELED AFTER CHARLES SCHULZ

The writer and producer of the Peanuts comic strip, Charles Schulz, designed Charlie Brown pretty much to be a replica of himself. “We always say that each of the characters represents a piece of our dad,” is what Charles’ son, Craig Schulz said in a new book (The Art and Making of the Peanuts) about the production of the new movie.

2. THERE ARE 17,897 STRIPS

There is almost 18 000 comic strips of the Peanuts. These strips ran in newspapers between 1950 and 2000. Each strip was drawn by Schulz himself until he died from colon cancer at age 77, the day before the last original strip ran.

3. CHARLES SCHULZ DIDN’T CHOOSE THE COMIC STRIP NAME

Charlie Brown first appeared as a character in a comic strip called Li'l Folks. When Schulz secured a publishing deal in 1950, the syndication service thought the name was too close to two other comics it ran at the time, and changed it to Peanuts. Schulz never liked the new name.

4. ICONIC CHARACTERS LIKE LUCY AND LINUS DIDN’T SHOW UP UNTIL YEARS INTO THE COMIC

The first Peanuts strip featured Shermy, Patty and Charlie Brown. It ran in seven newspapers in October 1950. Lucy and Linus only showed up after this.

5. LUCY STARTED OUT AS YOUNGER THAN CHARLIE BROWN

In her first comic strip in March 1952, Lucy started out as a toddler. Later, Schulz decided to make her Charlie Brown’s peer.

6. LINUS DIDN’T SPEAK FOR THE FIRST TWO YEARS

Linus appeared as Lucy’s younger brother in September 1952, but didn’t get a line in the comic until 2 years later. Yup, he only spoke in 1954.

7. FRANKLIN’S FIRST APPEARANCE IN THE COMIC WAS IN JULY 1968

In his first appearance, Franklin met Charlie Brown when they were both at the beach. Franklin later paid Charlie Brown a visit and found some of Charlie Brown's other friends to be quite odd. His last appearance was in 1999, the year before Schulz passed away.

8. CHARLIE BROWN ALMOST RECEIVED AN EGOT

EGOT is an acronym for "Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony" in reference to persons who have won all four awards. The Peanuts projects won two Grammies, four Emmy awards, and two Tony awards. They only never received an Oscar, however, they were nominated.

9. THE FIRST PIECE OF MUSIC IN THE STRIP WAS BY RACHMANINOFF

The character Schroeder's first piece he played in the strip was Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Prelude in G Minor.”

10. IN MOST OF THE COMICS, MARCIE HAS NO EYES

Marcie’s glasses mask her eyes throughout most of the original comic strips. However, she has no eyes.
