How to “chill out” technology free

In recent times, we often forget about spending time away from the screens and technology because we are convinced that our lives are to be lived within these devices and online social media platforms.

However, it is important to take some me-time away from technology every now and then, and if you aren’t doing this with us here at Sugar Bay camp, then here are some relaxing, technology free activities that you can indulge in some evenings to calm you down before bedtime and bring you back down to earth.

Here are 6 ways to reconnect with yourself without technology:

1. Reading

Make a list of your favourite sequels that you have been meaning to read for eons but never really got the chance to. Go to the library, borrow these books knowing that you have a deadline to fulfil. Then, sit down and get engrossed in the pages of a good old book.

2. Writing

We’re not advising writing a book, but just little, effortless pieces of creative writing like writing thank you notes or poetry or even a journal. This will calm your senses while also providing you with a platform to express your creativity.

3. Colouring

After a long day of having your brains overworked, finding comfort in crayons, a colouring book and silence can be the perfect way to end a long and tiring day. Colouring de-stresses the mind and is actually a very relaxing activity.

4. Knitting

Every year, millions of South Africans knit for 67 minutes a day, to create warm blankets for the less fortunate during the cold winter months in commemoration of Mandela Day. There's something so satisfying about making something with your very own hands, and knitting is the best answer to rest your mind while working your hands to do something for a good cause.

5. Puzzles

Crosswords, word searches, sudukos and even the traditional puzzles that you would have to literally piece together with your hands is a fun way of challenging yourself without a deadline. But in the process of getting it done, you’re allowing yourself a relieving therapy where you relieve yourself of the day’s stress for a while.

6. Dreaming

When we think about dreaming, we instantly think goals and ambitions and get lost in the definition, thinking it means we’ll have to work for it right away. This is not how dreaming works. Dreaming is your brains very own creative process which often brings pleasure and serenity to your mind and the thoughts it evokes. Get a scrapbook and fill it with all things that inspire you. Write down your goals, your ambitions, almost everything and anything you need to inspire, motivate and make you feel good.

And that's how you chill out traditionally and technology free.

Give yourself a decent break away from all those digital display screens, your body deserves it.
